In a move to break with the GOP’s big-spending past, House Republicans voted Thursday to ban their members this year from requesting earmarks, the pork-barrel spending that directs money to pet projects in home districts. The Republicans, who passed the moratorium by voice vote in a closed-door meeting, said they have now put pressure on the rest of Congress – Republicans in the Senate, and Democrats in both chambers – to follow their lead. “Today, House Republicans took an important step toward showing the American people we’re serious about reform by adopting an immediate, unilateral ban on all earmarks,” said …

A year ago, President Obama boldly, unequivocally demanded that Israel stop building settlements on the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Today he’s left with little choice but to swallow a stinging and public rebuke from America’s closest Middle East ally. Why? Too much is at stake. The administration has invested too much time, credibility and political capital to throw up its hands and walk away from its hard-fought efforts to get Israel and the Palestinians back to peace talks. An open fight with Israel is the last thing Mr. Obama needs in the midst of domestic political turmoil that has …

Anyone willing to look can see the disturbing evidence in the fallout from national policies. In January, the annual Index of Economic Freedom published by the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal revealed the bad fruit of decisions by the Bush and Obama administrations.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has directed state agencies not to discriminate against gay people, essentially overriding the state attorney general’s advice to colleges. McDonnell’s directive Wednesday came amid a public uproar over Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli’s letter last week telling public colleges they lack the authority to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. Cuccinelli told colleges to rescind or change any anti-discrimination policies that include protection for gay people. The Republican attorney general’s letter was denounced by gay-rights groups and Democrats. In the letter, Cuccinelli said colleges can’t include gays in their anti-discrimination policies without General …

Embattled former Rep. Eric Massa sat down for his much-anticipated Fox News interview Tuesday night and deployed the tickle defense. No. Really. Asked by Glenn Beck whether he had inappropriate sexual contact with any staff members, the New York Democrat said, “No – no, no, no.” But asked minutes later about a new report that said he has been under investigation for allegations that he groped multiple male staffers working in his office, the 24-year Navy veteran scoffed. “Now they’re saying I groped a male staffer.
