HARRISON, N.Y. (AP) | The crash of a Toyota Prius in New York caught the attention of federal regulators Wednesday after the driver said it accelerated on its own, then lurched down a driveway, across a road and into a stone wall. The crash heightens the attention surrounding unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles and a recall involving more than 8 million vehicles to address gas pedals that can become sticky or trapped under floor mats. The Department of Transportation is looking into the New York crash, spokeswoman Olivia Alair said Wednesday. Capt. Anthony Marraccini of the police department in Harrison, …

The American economy has just had its worst decade since the 1930s

THE headquarters of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Massachusetts, looks out on a row of shops. These used to be thriving places, where people bought furniture and other household goods. But collapsing property prices, foreclosed homes and soaring unemployment, all effects of the recession which the NBER announced on December 1st 2008, have taken their toll. Many shops are now empty, with “For Rent” signs forlornly fastened to them.

But the misery stretches well beyond the recession, as our charts above make clear. Taking the decade between 2000 and 2009 as a whole, growth was slower than in previous decades. These figures, compiled by Christopher Wood, a former journalist with The Economist and now a strategist at CLSA, a Hong Kong-based investment group, provide stark reminders of various aspects of the poor performance the American economy demonstrated during the “noughties”. …

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The family of a longtime Internal Revenue Service employee killed when a pilot harboring an anti-IRS grudge flew his plane into his office remembered the Vietnam veteran Saturday as devoted family man who likely would have tried to save his co-workers from the burning building before escaping himself. “He was full of life. Probably the best teacher I had in my life,” Ken Hunter said of his father, 68-year-old Vernon Hunter. The elder Hunter had been missing and presumed dead since Thursday, when software engineer Andrew Joseph Stack III slammed his plane into the Austin building …

At least one person in the building was missing. The FBI tentatively identified the pilot as Joseph Stack. A federal law official said investigators were looking at a long anti-government screed and farewell note that he apparently posted on the Web earlier in the day as an explanation for what he was …

The Cessna 310 crashed about 7:55 a.m., shortly after takeoff from the Palo Alto Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The crash site is one mile northwest of the airport.
