President Obama concluded a day of partisan clashes at the White House’s made-for-TV health care summit by vowing to pass the overhaul with or without Republicans, signaling his willingness to force the bill through Congress using controversial tactics. Mr. Obama asked Republicans for support on passing his stalled top agenda item, but spoke bleakly of overcoming significant policy differences at the end of the bipartisan event. “I don’t know, frankly, whether we can close that gap,” Mr. Obama said. “If we can’t close that gap, I suspect [congressional leaders of both parties] are going to have a lot of arguments …

SAN’A, Yemen — Yemeni forces raided an al Qaeda hideout and set off a gunbattle Wednesday as the government vowed to eliminate the group that claimed it was behind the Christmas bombing attempt on a U.S. airliner. The fighting took place in an al Qaeda stronghold in western Yemen that served as a safe haven for most of the attackers of the U.S. Embassy in 2008, killing 10 Yemeni guards and four civilians. A government statement said at least one suspected militant was arrested during the clashes. “The (Interior) Ministry will continue tracking down al Qaeda terrorists and will continue …

UPDATED: COPENHAGEN (AP) — The 10-day-old climate talks ran into disputes and paralysis as they entered a critical stage Wednesday, just two days before President Barack Obama and more than 100 other national leaders hope to sign a historic agreement to fight global warming. Poorer nations stalled the talks in resistance to what they saw as efforts by the rich to impose decisions falling short of strong commitments to reduce greenhouse gases and to help those countries hurt by climate change. Conference observers said, however, that negotiators still had time to reach agreements. Outside the meeting site in Copenhagen’s suburbs, …
